Celebrating Innovation: Introducing BGC’s 2024 Research, Development, and Innovation Report

Innovation has always been at the heart of BGC’s identity. It shapes the way we solve complex problems, strengthens our partnerships, and helps us make a meaningful impact on the industries and communities we serve. The 2024 Research, Development, and Innovation Report is now live, and it’s packed with examples of how our people are pushing the boundaries of applied earth science.

A Year of Discovery and Impact

In 2024, 240 staff members participated in 115 R&D projects, spanning everything from climate change impacts on flooding to advanced instrumentation for tailings facilities. Our work continues to balance three horizons of innovation: improving current methods (Horizon 1), experimenting with new technologies (Horizon 2), and pursuing high-risk, high-reward ideas (Horizon 3).

These projects reflect both immediate value for clients and long-term potential for transformation. Over the past decade, BGC has invested more than $38M across 364 initiatives, supporting staff, graduate students, and industry-academic collaborations.

Project Highlights

This year’s report features a wide range of standout projects:

  • Probabilistic Flood Forecasting: Deep learning models were developed to predict flood risks at gauged and ungauged crossings, supporting proactive decision-making.
  • Fiber Optic Sensing: Innovative instrumentation research is capturing soil strain and seismic changes in unprecedented detail.
  • Biocementation: Partnering with UBC and Genome BC, our teams are using microbes to stabilize mine tailings and explore carbon capture opportunities.
  • Structura and RiverBankAI: AI-powered tools are helping us analyze geology and river morphology faster, more accurately, and with direct client application.

Expanding Platforms and Partnerships

A major milestone was the launch of Cambio Earth, scaling our geohazard expertise into a platform now supporting more than 100 organizations worldwide. In 2024, Cambio added new datasets, visualization tools, and an Instrumentation Management Module, strengthening its role as a leader in geoscience decision-making.

Collaboration remained central: from hosting our annual Hackathon to publishing over 200 papers and presentations and partnering with universities across North America, Europe, and Australia, BGC continues to foster innovation and mentorship at every level.
